Packing for Morocco? Let’s make it easy! This is hands down the most common question I get as our Women’s Retreats approach—and for good reason!
I’m passionate about celebrating and preserving Morocco’s beautiful traditions and customs, and a big part of that is dressing in a way that balances modesty with comfort. Trust me, it’s completely possible to look fabulous, feel comfortable, and show respect for the local culture all at the same time.
To help you rock your Moroccan adventure with confidence, I’m sharing my top 5 game-changing tips for what to wear. Let’s dive in!
1. Embrace the Flow: Loose, Breathable Fabrics Are Your Best Friend
Morocco’s weather can be intense, especially in the summer months, so your wardrobe should be all about light, airy, and breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, and natural fibers. The last thing you want is to be stuck in heavy, non-breathable materials in the sweltering heat! Look for loose-fitting pieces like long skirts, flowy dresses, or wide-legged pants that let the air flow while still giving you the coverage that’s respectful of local customs. And when the temperature drops in the evenings? No problem—layer up for comfort.
2. Cover Up, But Keep It Comfortable
Moroccan culture appreciates modesty, so packing pieces that cover your arms and legs is a great way to honor local customs. But here’s the trick: You can stay cool and stylish without sacrificing comfort. Long-sleeved blouses, lightweight tunics, and maxi skirts are perfect. If you’re heading to the desert or a more rural area, a djellaba or caftan (traditional Moroccan robes) can be an amazing addition to your wardrobe. You’ll look fantastic, respect the culture, and stay cool at the same time!
3. Think Layers
The temperatures in Morocco can vary wildly depending on where you are and the time of day. In the desert, it can be scorching hot during the day, and then chilly at night. In the cities, you might experience milder, more consistent temperatures. The key? Layering! Pack light scarves, cardigans, or a packable jacket for evenings or cooler days. This way, you can easily adjust your outfit without needing a complete wardrobe change.
4. Footwear That’s Ready for Anything
You’ll be doing a lot of walking, whether you’re exploring Marrakech’s medina or taking a camel ride in the Sahara. So comfortable, durable footwear is a must! Opt for flat sandals, comfy sneakers, or walking shoes that can handle a variety of terrains. If you plan to dress up for a special occasion, a pair of stylish yet comfortable flats or low-heeled shoes will work wonders.
5. Accessorize With Purpose
Morocco is all about vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and beautiful craftsmanship, and your accessories can reflect that! Think colorful scarves, beautiful statement jewelry, or a chic hat to keep the sun off your face. But remember: while accessories can help you stand out in a stylish way, keep it simple and functional—especially when you’re out and about in markets or public spaces
