Should You Try the Hammam in Fes? Here’s What to Expect at Spa Mernissi

If you’ve been wondering whether the hammam experience is right for you, you’re not alone. A lot of women on retreat feel a mix of curiosity and hesitation about this Moroccan tradition. Let me walk you through exactly what it’s like—so you can decide for yourself with confidence.

First, What Is a Hammam?

A hammam is a traditional Moroccan steam bath and cleansing ritual that’s been part of local life for centuries. Think of it as a mix between a deep body exfoliation and a meditative spa experience. At Spa Mernissi in Fes—where I take my retreat guests—it’s done in a private, calm, and beautifully feminine environment designed to help you unwind and let go.

What the Experience Feels Like

You’ll arrive, change into a towel wrap (called a fouta), and step into a warm steam room where your body begins to relax and your pores open. A trained female attendant will gently apply black olive soap to soften your skin, then use a traditional exfoliating glove (called a kessa) to scrub away layers of dead skin.

It’s not painful, but it is thorough. You’ll literally see the old skin roll off—and with it, the dust of travel and stress you didn’t realize you were holding.

After the scrub, a clay mask may be applied to your skin or hair, depending on your treatment, followed by a rinse with warm water. The session ends with fresh towels, a quiet room, and a cup of Moroccan mint tea to help you ground back into your body.

Is It Intimate? Yes—and Beautifully So.

Let’s talk about what might feel uncomfortable: yes, you’ll be in your underwear or bikini bottoms, and yes, another woman will be washing and scrubbing your body. It’s okay to feel nervous. But I can promise you: the environment is incredibly respectful, calm, and professional. These women have been doing this for years. They are not judging you. In fact, there’s something healing about being cared for so gently and intentionally.

Many of my retreat guests say it’s one of the most powerful experiences of the trip—not just for the physical reset, but for the emotional release that comes with letting go.

Should You Do It?

If your body is craving rest, your mind is cluttered, or you just want to try something new that women in Morocco have done for generations—try it. You don’t have to be “ready.” Just be willing.

It’s okay if you choose to skip it, too. But if you’re curious, I’ll be there to walk you through it. And you might just walk out feeling softer, clearer, and more connected to yourself than you expected.

Retreat Tip: Bring a spare pair of underwear or a swimsuit bottom you don’t mind getting wet, and don’t wear makeup or heavy products that day. I’ll help you prep so you feel totally comfortable.

Have more questions? Just ask. I’m here to guide you every step of the way.
